Description
For the life of me I can't fathom the general public's view regarding the sport of kings. Since the 1970s we've been reminded about the demise of thoroughbred horse racing. First it was the lottery that would kill it. Then, in Connecticut, the most affluent state in the union, the descendents of tribes that pre-date Squanto constructed two gambling palaces to suck the pennies out of those who can ill afford to lose them. Thanks to the remnants of the Mashantucket and Mohegan tribes, Vegas, Reno and Atlantic City were now in your back yard. The tribes, clearly tired of selling cigarettes and managing bingo halls, sold their collective souls to those who were greedier and more lethal than King Philip himself, and to the top of the totem they went and were next in line to slay the beast. But after a decade of draining the dole money from the desperate, pensions from retirees and second mortgages from compulsive gamblers, folks were getting wise to the steel wigwams. These corporate reservations saw the need to overcome the "you can't beat the house" rap. Thus, the casinos, in cahoots with offshore Internet concerns and with the support of cable television, conspired to reinvent the game of poker.
